The official rules of the tournament. This is a pretty obvious rerun of the Amiibo Tag Tournament that we all know and love, but it’s exclusive to 10-16 year olds in Redmond, Washington. It’s basically a small side event at their Nintendo shindig to fill up stream space.
This tournament itself isn’t a big deal, but think of the corporate ramifications – Somebody somewhere at Nintendo of America got the go-ahead for an amiibo tournament in person. Nintendo has probably spotted that their Amiibo Tag Tournament online event is pretty popular with the fans, and no doubt they want to still sell amiibo for the life of the Switch. This isn’t a competitive tournament by any means (stages are set to random and items are on, including Smash Balls), but it doesn’t have to be. This just means that Nintendo is acknowledging that there’s still popularity to amiibo, and to Smash Ultimate amiibo specifically, and that maybe marketing the Smash functionality with amiibo could be a path to selling more amiibo down the line.

At the very least, this will spark people’s interest in competitive amiibo tournaments, even if it’s a short spark.
