The Best Way to Grind Coins in the Early Game – Paper Mario: TTYD Remake

by Doc – Owner, Founder, Is Honestly Floored By The Fact That Nintendo Not Only Didn’t Screw This Up But Also Did A Better Job Than The Original Game

Paper Mario: TTYD tends to be pretty generous with coins during the “meat” of Chapter 3, but prior to that they’re a bit scarce. I’ve dug up a pretty straightforward and easy method to grinding out coins that will help you as soon as you clear Chapter 1 and unlock West Rogueport.

To do this, you’ll need to have unlocked West Rogueport, and beaten the gang member that blocks off part of East Rogueport. He’s not hard to beat, and only has 10 HP, so just wale on him!

The Coin Method

The Pianta Parlor in West Rogueport has a number of items that can be exchanged for Pianta Tokens. Tokens themselves are purchaseable at a value of 1 Token for 3 Coins. You can expand the selection of items and minigames by obtaining “Pianta Cards”, which are only obtainable by completing certain troubles in the Trouble Center in East Rogueport.

So to do this method, you need to:

  • Beat Koopook’s “Try to find me!” trouble in the Trouble Center to obtain the Gold Card. The Gold Card unlocks the Plane Mode minigame in the Pianta Parlor, and the HP Plus and FP Plus badges.
    • Koopook himself can be found here:
Thanks to Youtube Channel “YouCube” for posting their tutorial video online.
  • Redeem the Gold Card he gives you at the Pianta Parlor. Be sure you have spent at least 30 coins to obtain 10 Pianta Tokens at the Token Exchanger machine.
  • Play the Plane Mode minigame, and try to get as far as you can. You’ll figure out pretty quickly that getting to a distance of over 400 automatically grants you 12 Piantas. Additionally, the floating Pianta tokens are in roughly the same place each playthrough – grab them to net even more Piantas. Experienced players can get at least 20-25 Pianta Tokens each playthrough, and average a net profit of 10-15 Tokens in less than a minute.
  • After bringing your total up to 160 Tokens which should only take about 20 minutes of consistent gameplay, you now have enough to move to the next step.
  • Buy at the Pianta Parlor an HP Plus or FP Plus badge (it doesn’t matter) and go sell the badge at the badge shop in Central Rogueport. To get to the badge shop, go upstairs in the inn and exit out the door on the left side of the room.
  • The badge will sell for 100 coins in the remake (I believe in the original it was only 75). Congratulations, you have earned 100 coins in ~20 minutes of grinding.

I recommend using this method to come up with the money for Lumpy, the green mouse asking for investments. Let’s just say that it’s worth giving him as much money as you can.
