How to Easily Beat the “Shiny Rayquaza” Tera Raid Event in Pokemon Scarlet/Violet

by Doc – Owner, Founder, Sometimes Forgets that Tera Raids are Hard

Odds are you’ve got a Pokemon on this list of the best Tera Raid Pokemon ever like Koraidon, Bellibolt, Annihilape, Miraidon, Gholdengo or something similar. Those won’t work. Rayquaza hits with four types of attacks: Dragon, Flying, Normal and Ground. Most of the best attackers are weak to at least one of those types, so you’ll have to cobble something together specifically for this raid if you don’t already have that Zacian build lying around. Fortunately, you’ve got two weeks to get Shiny Rayquaza, so listen up! This raid is easy as pie if you happen to have a Pokemon – just about any Pokemon – that fits these criteria:

  • Fairy monotype Pokemon at Level 100 with 6IV (or Bottle Cap equivalent)
  • Fairy-type attacks
  • Swords Dance, Nasty Plot, Calm Mind, Bulk Up or similar (optional, but helpful – it just has to be able to boost its damage output a bit)
  • Shell Bell

There’s a lot of cheap and easily available Pokemon that can pull this off like Clefable, Granbull, Florges, Sylveon, Alcremie and so on. If you’re feeling funky you could even pull Zacian or Xerneas out from Home and try them out. Dachsbun is also an option if you’re truly desperate, but I don’t recommend him. A lot of these attackers have Play Rough, so look for that before anything else.

Grab one of the listed raiders, juice it up with experience candies to level 90 or higher (100 is best, of course) and take it online – there’s typically other experienced raiders (not the Belly Drum users) who are trying to help out noobs like yourself who can ensure you don’t have to do it all by yourself.

The Raid Itself

See the Serebii page for the technical details before we talk strategy.

Rayquaza always begins with Dragon Ascent, which won’t bother you as a Fairy type. All this means is that he’ll waste ten seconds of your clock, but reward you by lowering his own Defense and Special Defense by a stage. Knucklehead. Don’t worry about raising your stats right off the bat – you want to build your Tera charge first so that when he puts his shield up and wipes your stats, you can Terastallize to Fairy and then raise your stats. Once you’ve done that… hit him! And keep hitting him until he’s yours.

That’s all it takes! I encourage you to keep this Pokemon and level it up to 100 with a 6IV Bottle Cap boost and maxed out EVs just in case, as Fairy-type Raiders are pretty helpful to have.
