How to Use the Onn Switch 2 Turbo Controller for Shiny Hunting in Legends: Z-A (Bench Method)

It’s been discovered that benches in Pokémon Legends Z-A are highly effective for shiny hunting, because every time you sit down on the bench and reset the night and day cycle it re-rolls all of the Pokémon in the radius to see if they’re shiny. However, most turbo controllers for the Nintendo Switch 2 are upwards of 80 bucks, save for this Onn branded controller from Walmart, which goes for about $20. I’d recommend this controller exclusively for shiny hunting in Legends Z-A, as it is otherwise a garbage controller. Here’s how to use it to shiny hunt:

1. Plug in the controller

Plug in the controller into your USB slot on the inside of the Nintendo Switch 2 dock, and be sure that you have it plugged in when you power on the Switch so the USB controller is the only one that it registers. You’ll have to take off the back plate to get into the USB ports.

2. Boot up the game

Boot up the game as normal, and find your bench.

3. Secure the analog stick

You’re going to want some way to hold the analog stick down. I used painter’s tape, as shown in this photo. Most people recommend rubber bands, but really just find whatever you have available.

My handiwork is true craftsmanship, folks.

Now position the camera so that the player character is in front of the bench, such that if you held down on the analog stick they would be running into the bench.

4. Activate the turbo

You activate the turbo on this controller by pressing the little T button to the right of the home button and under the + button. When you press it, press the T button and the A button. Do it a second time. At this point the lights should start flashing on the controller, indicating that turbo has been activated.

5. Set up the angle

Now, during the day and night change cutscenes, quickly set up your analog stick to be angled down. Make sure it’ll stick (it likely will, these are weak analog sticks). You have a lot of leeway on the exact angle, just make sure that after you’ve set it up you watch one or two cycles so that you know the angle of the analog stick will suffice. You’ll see your character running towards the bench, the controller will press the A button on its own, and the controller will activate the day and night cycle repeatedly.

If you find that the controller is not pressing fast enough, press the T button and upwards on the right analog stick to increase the frequency of presses.

That works for me, and I imagine it’ll work for you too. Best of luck!
