The Curious Case of “DIEGO” Mewtwo

by Doc – Owner, Founder, Seriously, Don’t Gen Pokemon and Then Put Them Into the GTS

If you think you’ve received a hacked Pokemon, check its information in the hacked Pokemon database here.

A few weeks ago I watched a video (that I unfortunately cannot find anymore) asking questions about a handful of Mewtwos they received through the Pokemon Home GTS system. For the uninitiated, players can put up a Pokemon and ask for a specific Pokemon species in return, though mythicals are unavailable on both ends of the equation. As best as I recall, this person was marveling at the fact that they received multiple Mewtwos, seemingly from Pokemon Bank, with Pokerus, and all having “DIEGO” as their OT. These Mewtwos were duplicated, no doubt. The video questioned whether these were passed on to him by other people who had already received them or whether DIEGO himself had duplicated tons of his own legitimate Mewtwo and was handing them out to people automatically. Given that his GTS requests were filled in quick succession, he concluded the second.

Since then I’ve had three junk Pokemon sitting in the GTS waiting for DIEGO to begin his rounds again in the hopes of catching DIEGO, and tonight was the night. Behold, the DIEGO Mewtwo.

Aside from the Pokerus, there’s nothing about this Mewtwo that screams “Illegitimate!” at you. You wouldn’t be able to tell by normal genned-Pokemon heuristics that a single DIEGO Mewtwo is hacked. But when you get duplicates of them in succession, you know without a doubt! Ideally, no two Pokemon are exactly the same in every way unless such circumstances were forced to be that way by the player… or hacked to be that way. In this case, it looks like hacks.

So I looked into this a bit further. Apparently that video isn’t the first time anyone’s mentioned the DIEGO Mewtwo. There’s a few discussion threads here and there by other people who have noticed this as well, and it seems that DIEGO just started fulfilling requests again this very night if that “date deposited” (which is today) is anything to go by.

These Mewtwos are obviously duplicated from a legitimate Mewtwo, likely caught all the way back in the DS era and traded up to Bank. Its IVs are irregular and imperfect just as you’d expect any old Pokemon to be, and is handled perfectly normally by any game you trade it to. Interestingly, it most likely would be coming from a hacked 3DS who still has Pokemon Bank available to it, as you’re unable to get something into HOME that says it’s from Pokemon Bank without it going through Pokemon Bank.

My guess is it’s just some guy who really likes Mewtwo and wants everyone to have one… or five. I’m up to fifteen, personally. Are you going to get one?
