What’s With All the Amiibo Reprints?

by Doc – Owner, Founder, Got Them the First Time

I don’t usually report on amiibo reprints at Amiibo Doctor, as those are patchy and region-dependent most of the time. I can’t help but notice that over the last few years they seem to have been a lot more frequent, and this makes me wonder – why?

I checked Gamestop this morning for amiibo listings and noticed that a few oddly specific amiibo were coming in the next week. See?

Duck Hunt was also getting reprinted, though not pictured

That’s kind of a weirdly eccentric set of amiibo – they have nothing in common besides being Smash amiibo. Best Buy’s also had a bunch of Smash amiibo reprints, like Sonic and Cloud and (in February) Joker and Terry. I don’t think there’s any real conspiracy behind these particular reprints but it is pretty odd that all these amiibo are coming back years after their original game was released. This probably isn’t pointing to some kind of upcoming Smash 6 announcement – at least, not before we get a Switch 2 announcement.

The most likely scenario is simply that Nintendo thinks there’s money to be made in reprinting them so that’s exactly what they’re doing. Still, it’s worth keeping an eye on.

  1. hey doc, the Amazon Affiliates links aren’t working or are potentially sending to the wrong item. can you reply the link for the affiliates?

  2. also, some of the reprints make sense: FF7 Rebirth released this February. In my area (toronto) best buy is carrying smash ganon zelda and shulk, which is because of the noah mio 2 pack. other than that there’s a theme of DLC, which could just be nintendo encouraging purchase of DLCfighters.
