by Doc – Owner, Founder, This Game Was So Hard To Explain To My Parents
The best way to understand the main draw of the Denpa Men games is to think of it as a cross of Pokemon Go and Earthbound. It takes the real-world location catching mechanics from Pokemon Go, in which you capture partners to use in battle, and combines it with battle mechanics very similar to Earthbound. Many of the original Denpa Men games were worked on by Genius Sonority, who had some staff in common with Game Freak’s early days, who themselves had some staff in common with Creatures, Inc. For both Pokemon fans and Mother series fans, the Denpa Men games will feel familiar because of this ancestry.
Succeeding at the Denpa Men games often requires you to physically leave your home and go catch Denpa Men with your device in urban areas, some of whom may be more useful than the ones you currently have. The game basically scans for surrounding Wi-Fi signals that the device can detect and converts the Wi-Fi signal information into unique Denpa Men that are exclusive to that Wi-Fi signal. The logical path to catching a lot of Denpa Men, then, is to be near a lot of different Wi-Fi routers emitting their signals.
There’s several kinds of areas that are generally useful for this:
- Universities with dense campuses
- Apartment buildings not sharing the same internet plan
- Malls and strip malls
- Government and office buildings
- Telecommunications companies (I’m not kidding, they have lots of routers going at once)
- Suburban neighborhoods
Do exercise discretion with how and where you play your game. It may be better to sit out in the parking lot catching Denpa Men than to bring your Switch into, say, the Internal Revenue Service or a police department. They tend to frown on that sort of behavior.
Also remember that Wi-Fi signals tend to reach beyond the walls of the building they’re in. Have you ever scanned for Wi-Fi on your phone and found signals that aren’t yours that you could connect to? That’s all the game needs to generate a Denpa Men, so don’t worry about getting up close and personal with the Wi-Fi signal.
