Your EVs Should Never Go Into HP – Tera Raid Build Strategy

by Doc – Owner, Founder, Wishes The Tera Raid Content Landscape Had Never Been Poisoned By Idiots

Since the beginning of Pokémon Tera Raiding, there’s been a misconception that, to keep things simple, you should put all your EVs into the stat you want to attack with, and your HP so as to make you as bulky and survivable as possible. I’ve already complained elsewhere about the misinformation on every other Tera Raid website offering build information, so I’ll truncate it here by saying – Amiibo Doctor is the only good place to get quality Tera Raid builds that I’m aware of. Other websites are typically AI-generated or copy-pasted from someone else who farted out a build right after SV came out and never went back to check if it was good.

HP Should Be Hard to Lose

Let’s say you’re in a 6-star raid, you’ve invested tremendously into HP and you’re a physical attacker, but the raid opponent has boosted their Calm Mind stats. You’re running Bulk Up which helps you on the physical side, but not on the special side. As a result, they can simply shoot a special attack your way and wipe you off the board. Yes, you have more HP, but it’s quite easy to lose that HP because the opponent self-boosts where you’re not defensive enough.

You’ll find that you would have had better defensive stats had you, since you’re running Bulk Up, invested all your HP EVs into Special Defense instead, and let the defensive boost from Bulk Up cover you on the physical side. Yes, you don’t have as much HP, but you don’t need it – it’s harder for you to lose that HP.

You Functionally Heal More

There’s a second reason – Shell Bell is practically a requirement for 6-star Tera Raids unless you’re running a life steal move like Giga Drain or Drain Punch. Shell Bell heals you based flatly on the calculation of 1/8 of the damage you deal. If you know that no matter how big your HP pool is, you’re going to gain the same amount of HP either way, you want to make it harder to lose HP, because that HP that you gain will go a lot farther. It’s a bit of an abstract concept but think of it like a cup – If the goal is to not let the cup empty out, you don’t care how big the cup is, you want to make it harder to get poured out.

If you don’t believe me, just try it out – you’ll see that it makes sense in practice even if it’s a bit too abstract.
