by Doc – Owner, Founder, Still Chuckles At Nintendo Delaying The Tears of the Kingdom Announcement Because of Queen Elizabeth’s Passing
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom releases in a week, and the Link amiibo alongside it. I want to make something clear:
This amiibo will sell out immediately, everywhere when it releases on May 12. Most retailers have already sold out. When researching available listings, I found that Target and other retailers sold out of their pre-orders over a week before release.
The Breath of the Wild amiibo sold out just about everywhere for the first year in the US and were singlehandedly responsible for keeping interest in amiibo alive as Nintendo transitioned from the Wii U to the Switch. This game dominated the Switch and is still one of the best-selling games on the platform over 5 years later. I don’t expect that Tears of the Kingdom will be as impactful of a game as the original, but I do expect that Nintendo will understock the first prints of the TOTK Link amiibo to gauge interest.
So here’s your best shot as of May 5. These are the only pre-orders I can find online.

Gamestop Pre-Order – May require in-store pickup. Gamestop is not advertising that they’ll have supply available in-store on release day, so don’t expect to get one without pre-order.
Best Buy Pre-Order – Ditto with Best Buy. Best Buy is advertising that they’ll have in-store pickup. Plan on in-store pickup, because it’ll take a few days extra for it to be shipped to you.
