I think I found an RNG Freezing Glitch in Pokemon Scarlet

I found a glitch with Pokémon Tera Raids. Fair disclaimer though, I’ve not had the chance to more thoroughly confirm the conditions that cause this to happen.

Presently in Scarlet and Violet, if you are running Tera Raids and you haven’t connected to the internet your teammates are restricted to one group of three specific teammates, out of a possible 100 or so groups. This means that, while they’re random still, they don’t operate on an independent probability. Rather, you have odds of getting that group of teammates. This glitch is fixed once you connect to the internet, as all your NPC teammates after that will be selected correctly. This means that basically, for offline Tera raiders like myself you’re typically going to pull something like a team of Intimidate users about 10% of the time. It’s small, but it does have important effects if you’re using a lower tier raider.

Well, I’m not 100% sure that I’ve identified the cause of this, but I’ve noticed that if I use online features, disconnect from them, leave Pokémon Scarlet running on my Switch 2 overnight, let the day roll over so that the Tera Raids are refreshed, and reopen the game the next day, I see some unlikely events occurring again. I’ve noticed several times here and there that when the raids refresh, they often feature the same Pokémon but with a different Tera type. It’s not 100% consistent, but it is significantly more frequent than it would ever otherwise be.

Additionally, I seem to be pulling exactly the same team of NPC raiders across all the different six star Tera Raids that I do offline, even after resetting the calendar date again to get new raids. The last five raids that I’ve done all had Gardevoir, Arboliva and Arcanine, which is basically the best offline NPC combo for most raids. I’ve not paid that much attention to my NPC teammates before but I do remember thinking that I had some similar looking teams previously, and I’ve paid enough attention now to notice this for sure. I suspect that some sort of RNG variable is not being correctly emulated on the Switch 2. It’s well known that the Pokémon Scarlet Switch 2 edition is not a clean emulation of the original – for example, pressing the home button on the Switch 2 and leaving it keeps the raid timer ticking, which as has been documented many times in Tera Raid videos before the Switch 2, should freeze the timer!

I’m going to keep testing and see what I can find, but if I’m on to something or at least half of what I’ve said is true it means we may have found a way to freeze an RNG seed in Pokémon Scarlet.
