Welcome to Amiibo Doctor! In addition to training this amiibo, we also have the most cutting-edge guides for nearly every amiibo in the competitive amiibo scene’s many Discord servers. You should also reference our Raid Boss amiibo guides, and if you’re having trouble winning in competitive amiibo, check the official amiibo tier list! Happy training!
Because this Robin guide is modern, it should be referenced over the other, existing Robin guides here.

Introduction
Hello trainers, I’m Crunchy and I will explain here how to train Robin (in my opinion).
It’s been a year since I’m training amiibo and Robin is clearly my most successful amiibo. Recently I tested and trained a lot to learn as much as possible about the Robin AI. The guide will mostly be based on my tests and discussions with other trainers. Special thanks to Salty, soysauce and kbee for the help.
To give me some credibility, here are some results of my Robin Ekko Nart:
- Kinda Mid 8: 2/512 (B+ and below)
- Bounty Hunt: Sora: 9/256 (A and below)
- Smashin Rivals #1: 7/88 (B+ and below)
- Monika’s Ranked Tours #3: 13/141 (B+ and below)
- Also survived 10 loops in Archimedean with a 9/512 in loop 3 and a 7/192 in loop 6 (Robin and below)
In this guide I will go over two ways of training Robin, the Defensive Robin (mine is a defensive one) and the Offensive Robin, explaining the specific strengths and weaknesses of both.
Brief Value Guides
Defensive Robin
Grounded Moves: Down Smash 30–40, Up Smash 10–15, Forward Smash 5–10, Side Special 15–25, Down Special 10–15, Neutral Special 10 or a bit lower, Dash Attack 25–35
Aerial Moves: Forward Air 35–40, Up Air 20–25, Back Air 15–20, Down Special air 3–8
Other: Around 40 Offensive, Max Shield Near Grounded, Max Feint Shooter, 0 Charger, 0 Attack Out Cliff, 0 Dash, 60–90 Parry. Grab between 30 and max (High Grab = High Risk High Reward).
Offensive Robin
Grounded Moves: Down Smash 30–40, Up Smash 15–20, Forward Smash 5–10, Forward Tilt 10–15, Side Special 10–15, Down Special 10–15, Neutral Special 0.5–1, Dash Attack 25–35
Aerial Moves: Forward Air 35–40, Up Air 20–25, Back Air 15–20, Down Special air 3–8
Other: 60–75 Offensive, Max Shield Near Grounded, Max Feint Shooter, 0 Charger, 0 Attack Out Cliff, 0 Dash, 60–90 Parry. Grab between 30 and max (High Grab = High Risk High Reward).
The Robin Amiibo
Robin is a solid B+ amiibo with the potential to do well in higher tiers with some good matchups, especially against fat characters.
Strengths
- A crazy ledge trap — Robin will get most of his kills when the opponent is on the ledge or near the ledge because Down smash with Levin sword can catch some recoveries but also catch rolling and normal getups. Grab can also catch some rolls, and Robin will use Back throw to put the opponent offstage again or even take a stock with it.
- A ton of damage with Levin sword moves with the help of some combos out of Grab and Side special.
- Robin can be difficult to approach thanks to Side special and Neutral special, especially Side special which stays on the ground a long time and can lead to some combos if it hits.
- Robin can easily beat parry with Down smash, Side special and Down special.
Weaknesses
Robin can struggle against fast characters — they can reduce the distance rapidly and Robin’s attacks are slow. His get-off-me tools are mid which is why Robin struggles in up-close range.
Robin’s worst nightmare are characters with long range or projectiles, especially if they have moves with more range than Robin’s Side special.
AI Issue
Robin has one main AI issue which is charging Neutral special after parry. Sadly you can’t avoid this, so if you see your Robin doing this don’t worry — it’s normal.
The Training
Be sure to not run, jump or roll. Robin shouldn’t go offstage because of his really good ledge trap. Robin needs some parry, not a lot because of the charging Neutral special issue, but when he uses a Levin sword smash attack out of parry it’s a ton of free damage. If you want a Defensive Robin use shield a lot, and if you want an Offensive Robin make sure to attack a lot and don’t shield too much.
Up-Close Moves
Your main move will be Down smash — use it a lot up-close and near the ledge, try to catch some recoveries. This move is crazy; it’s a big multi hit that beats parry and deals a lot of damage.
Use Grab a lot. Down-throw leads to some aerial moves that deal a lot of damage with Levin sword on, and Forward and Back throws are really good tools to put your opponent offstage.
Use some Dash attack and Down special. Dash Attack is the best bronze sword move — Robin can use it when recharging his Levin Sword. Down special is good because it beats shield and deals a lot of damage if the opponent is at high percent. Don’t use it too much because Robin will start to miss it sometimes.
Use a little bit of Forward smash — this move can be parried pretty easily by the opponent, but it can kill really early and it’s really good out of parry or out of Side special.
If you go for an Offensive Robin, use some Forward tilt — this move is a get-off-me tool using the bronze sword.
Mid-Range Moves
Defensive Robin: Use Side special a lot — this move is his best zoning tool and it’s also a really good combo tool that leads to smash attacks. Use a bit of Neutral special and make sure to never charge it; use the first charge only so your Robin won’t charge it right in front of your opponent.
Offensive Robin: Use some Side special as well but not too much because he will spam it and miss it a lot. You also want to use a tiny bit of Neutral special — use it almost never, for the same reason as Side special.
Anti-Air Moves
Use a bit of Up smash because this move is big and it combos after Side special. Don’t use it too much because you want to keep the Levin sword for Down smash and aerial moves. Use more Up smash with Offensive Robin since it’s surprisingly a good bronze sword move that leads to Dash attack.
Aerial Moves
Forward air must be the aerial move you use the most — it’s his best landing option, it’s big in front of him and under him.
Then balance between Up air, Neutral air and Back air. Up air is a really good juggling and combo tool. Neutral air and Back air have really good angles so they’re good for putting opponents offstage.
Land with a really tiny bit of Down special — it beats opponents that shield a lot. It’s kind of optional but in my opinion having a really tiny bit of Aerial Down special is better than not having it.
Quick TLDR
Close Range
- Down Smash
- Grab
- Dash Attack
- Down Special
- Forward Smash (optional)
- Forward Tilt (optional)
Mid-Range
- Side Special
- Neutral Special (a tiny bit and don’t charge it)
Anti-Air
- Up Smash
Landing
- Forward Air
- Neutral Air
Aerials
- Forward Air
- Up Air
- Neutral Air
- Back Air
Why Both Work
Defensive Robin
Strengths: Defensive Robin will manage his resources better — since he’s more passive he will use its resources less quickly and play defensively to recover them. Defensive Robin never uses the bronze sword which is good. He will also use his projectiles better.
Weaknesses: Defensive Robin is really bad at approaching and he’s really bad at close range. He also tends to roll away a lot. He will also parry more which can be good or bad because of the charging Neutral special out of parry issue.
Offensive Robin
Strengths: Offensive Robin is better against Robin’s bad matchups since he’s better at close range because of Forward tilt. He will spam Down smash at close range with Levin sword and can even break shields with it.
Weaknesses: Offensive Robin has one main issue which is his own resources. He will use them very quickly and you might see him using some Down Smash or Aerials with bronze sword, which are pretty weak.
Hope this guide helped you!
